Australian Velvet Gecko Care Sheet

The Australian Velvet Gecko (Oedura monilis) is indigenous to the southeastern part of Queensland, Australia. This species is typically found on the ground among dead trees and foliage.

Oedura monilis is a smaller species of gecko, with a slender appearance, reaching a total length of around six inches.

This species has adhesive pads on their feet, which enable them to climb up the walls of their enclosure. This species can be kept in screen enclosures or glass terrariums with plenty of hiding places and branches for climbing with a secure screen top.

Oedura monilis is a nocturnal species and will become active at night only when the lights are turned out. For easier viewing of this species at night you may use a low wattage red bulb which will allow you to view the gecko without the disturbance of bright light.

A basking light can be provided for warmth during the day over a screened enclosure and a sixty watt bulb will give you temperatures of around 85 Deg F. Daytime temperatures for this species should be anywhere from 80-85 Deg F during the day with a nighttime temperature reduction of around fifteen degrees.

A fluorescent light fixture can be mounted over the top of the enclosure with a standard UV fluorescent bulb during daytime hours.

A light misting in the early morning over the enclosure will provide all the necessary humidity that is required for this species.

A shallow water dish should be provided at all times.

Feeding consists of crickets, meal worms and they have also been known to take nectar or fruit items such as strained baby food apricots, peaches or pears.

Females are quite productive and will lay anywhere from five or more clutches per year depending on their health and diet.

The eggs will be soft shelled like that of the Leopard Gecko but much smaller. The eggs should be removed from the enclosure and placed into damp vermiculite for incubation.

The incubation temperature should be maintained at around 83 Deg F and hatching occurs anywhere from 55-60 days. At this temperature you will hatch out both males and females. The eggs are not temperature sex determined as allot of other gecko species are.

Sex determination of this species is difficult until the Velvet Geckos reach an age of around seven  months. In males there is an obvious bulge at the base of the tail.
